Abstract
This study investigates the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in production management among selected industries in Asaba Metropolis. Given the burgeoning global digital
transformation in manufacturing, the research seeks to ascertain the level of AI adoption, how significant the integration is, and the challenges hindering its effective implementation. A
descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The population consisted of 2,800 staff from five selected production firms (Animal Care Service Konsult Nig. Ltd, Vitex Aluminum Company Ltd, Smithex Paint Ltd, Otibest Plastic Company, and Martinex Ceramics Nig. Ltd). A sample size was determined using the Taro Yamane formula, and a simple random sampling technique was used to select respondents. Primary data was collected using a structured questionnaire instrument, anchored on a 5-point Likert scale. The findings revealed that while industries in Asaba Metropolis are adopting AI in their production management processes, the level of this adoption is not significant. Furthermore, the study identified that the poor integration of AI is primarily due to critical internal challenges, namely management lapses and significant skill gaps among the workforce. The study concludes that without strategic interventions to address these management and human capital deficiencies, the industries in Asaba risk falling behind in the competitive gains offered by AI-driven production management. It thus recommends that, AI adoption be prioritized by production firms; that the adoption of AI in production management by these industries be made a significant company’s business strategy; and the need to tailor manpower training for both management and staff, in order to address the issue of poor integration of AI in production management amongst these industries.
